Three New Jersey gubernatorial candidates will address a state convention of disability advocates Saturday in Atlantic City, convention organizers said.
Democratic candidate Jim McGreevey, Republican candidate Bret Schundler and state Sen. William Schluter, an independent candidate, are scheduled to outline their plans to make the state more accessible to people with disabilities and discuss other issues that directly affect the disabled community, organizers said.
Disabilities 2001, a political convention for people with disabilities, will take place from 1-5 p.m. at the Atlantic City Convention Center.
The New Jersey Developmental Disabilities Council, a federally funded watchdog for disability issues in the state, sponsors the gathering.
"This effort is part of the council's broader strategy to involve people with disabilities and their families in public policy decision-making that so dramatically affects their lives," council Executive Director Ethan Ellis said in a prepared statement.
"There are more than a million residents of New Jersey who have a disability, and their issues are emerging as the major public policy issues of the 21st century," Ellis said. "A growing movement of people with disabilities is addressing those issues. That is what this convention is all about."
