(NEWARK, OCTOBER 1) - House Speaker Dennis Hastert joined Republican Gubernatorial Nominee Bret Schundler at Newark Airport Monday to discuss President Bush’s proposal to tighten security at U.S. airports in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
“The security enhancements unveiled last week by President Bush will ensure that our airports are safer and that Americans can feel comfortable returning to air travel,” Hastert said. “This plan will require strong cooperation between the federal government and state officials, and I know that as Governor, Bret Schundler will be able to work closely with us on implementing these measures.”
Last week President Bush outlined his plan to increase the federal government’s oversight of passenger and baggage screening, to increase the presence of sky marshals aboard airplanes, and to increase government investment in enhanced cockpit protections.
Because Newark Airport is operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the next Governor and his appointees will play an important role in coordinating these new safety measures with federal officials.
“One aspect of defeating terrorism is to refuse to allow the terrorists to use fear to paralyze our society,” Schundler said. “The President’s proposal will allow us to dramatically tighten airport security, restoring the public’s confidence in the safety of our airlines, and thereby sending a message to the terrorists that they can not achieve a victory through fear.”
“Acting Governor DiFrancesco and Port Authority Chairman Eisenberg have already signaled their willingness to support the President’s initiatives, and as Governor I would look forward to continuing New Jersey’s support and working closely with the federal government to ensure that Newark airport is safe for all air travelers.”
Hastert also offered to help Schundler in the final weeks of his gubernatorial campaign.
“Now more than ever, this is a time when we need courageous, compassionate, determined leadership at the state level -- and Bret Schundler is the proven leader we need as Governor of New Jersey,” Hastert said.
