In Case You Missed It . . . (A Month Ago)
Bret Schundler’s Position on Right-to-Carry
New York Times, 6/24/01
“But conservative leaders said they did not believe Mr. Schundler had pandered to them. Nancy Ross, a spokeswoman for the Association of New Jersey Rifle and Pistol Clubs, the state affiliate of the National Rifle Association, recalled a meeting a few months ago at which Mr. Schundler agreed with many of the group’s positions, but not all. For example, he would not come out in favor of permitting the carrying of concealed weapons.
“ ‘People asked him about the right to carry, and he said the fact of the matter is it’s not going to get passed right now,’ Ms. Ross said. ‘He said he would be interested in looking at a study of other states, to see if it’s reduced crime, and what is the reality. I thought that was an honest answer. It wasn’t like he was saying he was going to raise the banner for that tomorrow. But I think people like straight shooters, to use a pun, and he’s a straight shooter.’”
