Schundler Praises DiFrancesco and Legislature For Proposals Responding to the September 11 Terror Attacks

(WEST ORANGE, OCTOBER 3) - Republican Gubernatorial Nominee Bret Schundler issued the following statement Wednesday in response to today’s address by Acting Governor Donald DiFrancesco in which he outlined how the Governor’s office and the Legislature will respond to the tragic events of September 11:

“I want to commend Acting Governor DiFrancesco, and all the members of our Legislature on their response to the deplorable September 11 terrorist attacks. These steps, outlined today by the Acting Governor, and supported by Republicans and Democrats in the Legislature, will help our state to begin the process of recovering from this tragedy, while preparing us to deal with any future attacks.

“In its response to this attack, New Jersey has demonstrated that when we have a common goal we are able to pull together for the common interest. I fully support the proposals of the Acting Governor and the Legislature to provide free tuition to the children of the victims of this attack, to have New Jersey enter the Emergency Assistance Compact with surrounding states, and to do a comprehensive assessment of the security needs of our strategic assets - ideas I have discussed in recent weeks.

“Acting Governor DiFrancesco was absolutely right when he said that our State Police, National Guard, and Office of Emergency Management have served New Jersey well, but that the stakes are higher, and the threat clearer, than when these organizations began coordinating possible responses to potential terrorist attacks three years ago.

“That is why I am glad to see New Jersey taking steps to address this more dramatic threat. I pledge that as Governor I will continue the implementation of these important proposals so that we can be sure that all of our citizens are safe, and that we are prepared to deal with whatever emergencies we may confront.”
