By Chapter 161 of the Laws of 1991 (signed by Gov. James Florio on June 13, 1991), the Hadrosaurus (Hadrosaurus foulkii) is the New Jersey State dinosaur.
At Haddonfield, on October of 1858, William Parke Foulke discovered the first dinosaur fossil in the United States -- the first complete dinosaur skeleton found anywhere. Also, as befits a dinosaur in a democracy, the Hadrosaurus was the first publicly exhibited skeleton of a prehistoric reptile. The Hadrosaurus, a duckbilled dinosaur, probably lived along the bays of New Jersey's seacoast in the Cretaceous Period, about 80 million years ago. The Hadrosaurus was twenty-five feet in length, 10 feet tall, and weighed between 7 and 8 tons. The blunt teeth show that Hadrosaurus was a vegetarian, with the ability to graze on stems, twigs and leaves. Hadrosaurus remains are found in a matrix of prehistoric marine deposits and fossilized seashells.
